For several years I*ve given a lot of time to building up the United Fund and it has not cost the organization a single penny. Why do I do this—because I believe the United Fund is the sensible way to support the organizations so essential to the welfare of Boone and Watauga County. It provides a balanced ap proach to meeting all health and welfare needs—not just the spectacular and easily drama tized ones. It eliminates duplication ir agency services through (a) a centralized budget control anc Cb) it eliminates unnecessary organizations. It enables agencies, relieved at time-consuming fund-raising responsibilities as a major ac tivity, to devote more time to program and service. It eliminates the annoyance and confusion of separate and oftentimes competing cam paigns. It reduces the cost of fund raising by consolidating the costs of many appeals in a single operation. It conserves manpower by concentrating volunteer partici pation in a single solicitation effort. It provides a method for a fair distribution of funds, through annual budget review. It represents the giving pat tern most acceptable for the financing of local, state and national health and welfare pro grams. Stanley A.
